people who call any black & white cat a "tuxedo" cat.

according to wikipedia;
To be considered a true tuxedo cat, the feline's coloring should consist of a colored coat, with white fur limited to the paws, belly, chest, throat, and often the chin - sometimes the tail. Tuxedo cats can appear to have goatees due to the black coloration of their mandible, lower jaw, and chin. White muzzles or a white coloring on their faces are a common attribute of tuxedo cats.[6] Most tuxedo cats are also "black-mask cats" with a complete white blaze, a common name for felines who, due to their facial coloration, look as if they are wearing a black mask over their eyes, and often over their entire head. The ideal color distribution is symmetric, and the white areas are of modest size and limited to the desirable areas.

there are other bicolor patterns & the article has a couple of charts to understand the difference between them.

like most pet peeves it is a bit nitpick-y, but that's just the way some are.
archersangel: general stargate icon (stargate)
an idea from [personal profile] ivorygates

So next year is The Year of the Snake. And I, having a one-track narrow gauge mind, immediately thought "snakes=Goa'uld". And then I thought: ficathon.

But I have never run a ficathon and do not have the energy to learn, and the thought of keeping track of all that deadliney-stuff makes me want to cry.

But maybe we could all do The Little Ficathon That Wasn't. Everybody, sometime in 2025, could post a Goa'uld-centric story and give it that tag. And as long as everything was posted and tagged by December 31, 2025, it would be on time and everything.

see the original post here.

also, if you have stargate people still active in your circle & you could post about this to get more interest that would be nice. please and thank you.

if you didn't see it in [site community profile] dw_news back in september's update it was talked about how much DW costs to run and the fact that prices have not increased in the 15 years(?!) since the site started.

well, in the december entry some number have been mentioned;

Despite the new prices not being final yet, expect them to fall somewhere between $52.50-$55 for 12 months of regular paid time and $75-$77.50 for 12 months of premium paid time, which means somewhere between $4.40 and $4.60 for 1 month of regular paid time.
The value of points will not change: each new point will still cost $0.10 USD and all existing points will still be redeemable for $0.10 USD worth of services. For instance, if the cost of 1 month of regular paid time goes from its current "$3 USD or 30 points" to $4.50 USD, that will be "$4.50 USD or 45 points".

but also;
I know any kind of price increase can be a hardship for people, so I'm announcing this well ahead of time so that people have a chance to stock up on points and/or buy paid time in advance during this points bonus month (which we will continue to offer even after prices increase!) You can buy as much paid time as you want in advance: any extra time you buy gets added to your existing paid time and makes your expiration date extend further into the future, so if, for instance, you put 5 "12 months of paid time" items into your cart right now and complete the payment, you'll get 60 months of paid time added to your account. Because of how the payment system works, it's not possible to transfer paid time from one account to another, but you can convert existing paid time back into points in the future and then use those points for a future order.

As always, we remain incredibly grateful to you all for your support. We're one of the only sites out there that has no advertising, has taken no venture capital, and does no intrusive data brokering: our only income comes from you all saying "yes, we value this site enough to keep it running", and the fact enough of you keep saying "yes, we value this site enough to keep it running" to, well, keep it running means so much to us. We are going to keep stubbornly insisting that there is a better, more ethical way to do social media for as long as we possibly can, and it's thanks to you that we can keep proving to doubters that it works.

edwardrhamiliton.com the place for books. some of the books are slightly damaged & if you don't mind that these are good bargains. i've bought from them for years and really like this company. most of their orders ship within 48 hours of them getting your order so i wouldn't do last-minute stuff with them. (it's been several years since i've bought from them.)

sock dreams the place for socks & stockings. i've never used them, but heard many good things. if you, or someone on your list, likes unique socks and/or stockings this is the place to shop. (have not bought from here)

humon on deviantart (i think she deleted her account) who does scandinavia and the world has some merchandise now. (never got anything from here.)

the guy who does rejected princesses has posters for sale, calendars & cards too (some from the blog, some from the books). and now he has a RP book with a bunch of new entries. (never bought from here.)

adagio tea sells loose-leaf teas & tea paraphernalia. they have all kinds; black, decaf, green, etc. & even fandom blends! (it's better to search for the one you're interested in, than to look through their list) there could be more than one for what you're interested in. for example; there are a couple for daniel jackson of SG-1, so read the flavor description to see if it's something you might like. they sell sample tins that make about 5 cups (except for some which are 10 or the ice tea, which is 6 pouches that make 40oz), so you can try it before committing to a larger amount.
they even tell you at what temperature & how long to steep the teas for.
make sure you read the whole page for the tea you're interested in, as some are higher in caffeine than others. (never got anything from them)

uncommon goods "If you're on the hunt for quirky, unusual gifts that are guaranteed crowd-pleasers, you've come to the right spot." gifts for men, women (both have subcategories like dad, mom, husband, wife & so on) geeks, the home & kids, plus many things can be personalized. (never ordered from them.)

snag tights similar to sock dreams, but 80% tights/pantyhose. the rest is leggings, shorts that prevent chafing, underwear, shirts, with some socks & clothes. for their tights/pantyhose they have 2 size guides; one for if you have a prominent stomach and/or butt & or for if you have a flat stomach and/or butt. they say they've tested their tights/pantyhose on sizes 1 to 34 and they show women of varrious body types, so you can get an idea of how things will look on.(never got anything from them)

thigh society anti-chafe shorts (not shapewear) that can be used for working out, sleepwear, under a dress/skirt for modesty or loungewear. they have sheer, semi-sheer & mostly opaque styles that can be worn as underwear or over it. they come in 3 leg lengths (5, 7 & 9 inch. 1 has 12, 17, & 21 inch options), sizes XS/S to 5/6XL & several colors. there's even a style that has a pocket. (never got from them)

peter pauper press notebooks, journals, stationary, planners, stickers, pens, pencils, & organizers; including ones for what your wishes are after you pass on, wedding planning, baby's first years, your travel plans, tracking exercise, what you eat & more. (never bought from them)

most things do it automatically, but stuff like ovens (the basic ones not connected to the internet) & microwaves won't.

also check the settings of any blogs, websites, or forums you belong to. some may have a thing to check/uncheck for daylight saving time. it's likely under the display setting.

i will spare you all the usual rant about about the uselessness of the whole concept. google stuff if you want to learn more.

Since we launched in 2010, we have become the leading online resource for women and girls’ DIY historical costuming. People use our site for occasions all year long: Women’s History Month, Black History Month, Halloween, Purim, Mardi Gras, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Diwali, Hai Ba Trung Day, cultural festivals, special school events, historical reenactments, and more. Educators even use our site as a novel way to teach history. We get millions of visits from all over the world.

We take seriously our responsibility to provide accurate information and a positive, empowering experience. When a girl or woman goes online to find out how to dress up as the great queen Nzinga, for example, she finds our site.

If she wants to dress up as the mathematician Ada Lovelace, or the flying ace Bessie Coleman, or the feminist Sor Juana, or the pirate Ching Shih, she finds our site. Because the commercial costume industry doesn’t begin to accurately reflect women’s history, many of our DIY designs have been specifically requested or commissioned—such as our design for the Trung Sisters. We continue to add new costume designs as time allows. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that everybody can find their heroines and heritage represented.

Eclipse Give Back

We are often asked what to do with used eclipse glasses after an eclipse. Eclipse Glasses USA works with other organizations to donate used but undamaged eclipse glasses to other countries with upcoming eclipse events.

make sure they're US-made paperboard glasses that have the manufacturer's address and contact info and that bear the ISO logo.

from the comments of the post;
warby parker will take them until april 30 for astronomers without borders.

check with local libraries/schools/museums to see if they're collecting them.

We’re not selling any of this stuff. We’re a non-profit educational resource guide: we come up with the costume design, explain what you’ll need to pull off the look, and provide links to the various components we used. Our overall approach is about creating great costumes by hacking together stuff that is either already in your closet, on sale at Amazon or some other retailer, or in stock at a costume store.

Though we think sewing is a wonderful skill, none of our costume designs require it. Our aesthetic is more lo-fi—think safety pins, glue, scotch tape. In fact, most of our costumes require absolutely no crafting at all; just a judicious selection of items.

This game guides you through a series of questions that help you practice self care.
It's especially useful for people who struggle with self care, executive dysfunction, and/or reading internal signals. It's designed to take as much of the weight off of you as possible, so each decision is very easy and doesn't require much judgment.
Take your time. Set aside some time--maybe an hour total--to allow yourself to work through each step. Don't rush or skip ahead; just follow the directions. Self care is important, and you deserve to devote some time to it.
You can even go through this routine as soon as you wake up, as a preventative measure.

Ramadan is coming up, and Aseel(*) is fundraising for meals for iftar, the nightly breaking of the fast, in Afghanistan. If you have some charity budget for the month, Aseel is a great place to put it:

Iftar package for individuals (daily package to be distributed to those in need in Kabul, $3 each)
Iftar package for families (food for a family of 8 for 3 weeks; $98 each)

(*) I don't think I've mentioned them here yet: they're a startup platform run by Afghans for Afghans, sort of a combination of Etsy for Afghan artisans and GoFundMe for raising money for specific campaigns. Afghanistan is suffering greatly right now and Aseel is doing fabulous work there; if you don't have the budget for donations, take a look at their marketplace the next time you need a gift for something, because my god, some of the work is fucking amazing. (Just be sure to leave plenty of time for shipping -- one of the things I ordered in November got here a few weeks ago, heh.)

The tl;dr of this entry:
* Many legitimate older accounts have been broken into this week and used for spamming.
* This is not a security issue with Dreamwidth itself: we've confirmed the hijacked accounts were compromised through password re-use.
* Our investigation makes us think this is connected to 2020's LiveJournal security incident.
* For your safety, treat any password you have ever used on LiveJournal, on any account, at any point, as compromised.
* Do not reuse any password you have ever used on LiveJournal on any other site, but especially on Dreamwidth.
* If your Dreamwidth password is the same as any password you've ever used on LiveJournal, on any account, at any point, change it now.
* Please install a password manager, let it generate your passwords for you, and use it to remember your passwords.

you may have heard about this thing that started on tumblr & got kind of big. this post on tumblr explains where it started. basically, someone got boots with a label that mentioned a scorsese produced movie from like 1973 that doesn’t exist. and it snowballed from there. someone made a poster with the cast. people have done fanart (including a review from gene siskel before he joined ebert on TV), fan fiction, some have even created music for it.

There’s a tv tropes page which is the movie in a way. i think there are gifs or stills from movies of the mid ‘70s with actors from the poster & lines they made up too. If you click on the this tag on tumblr you can see what people have made.

so, i decided to go join in the madness.

it’s not a movie, it’s an experience )
