i was wondering why when sci-fi tv shows do a mirror universe or alternate timeline are the names the same?

i suppose it's to avoid confusion for the viewers, but is it reasonable to think the first names would be the same? like you could be jane in this universe & sally in another. or the spelling could be different. anne vs ann, for example.

ST: DS9, which had more mirror universe episodes than any other trek, touched on this by having mirror sisko call mirror universe o'brien smiley. although he was not thrilled with the nickname.

it is getting down the the final 5 and there's no one that i want to win (maybe the married parents), but who i hope doesn't win are the boyfriends. they seem kind of evil, especially the shorter one.

they're not as bad as in the season with the former miss teen U.S.A. contestant who gave a rambling answer about maps. she wore a headband reminiscent of a pageant crown & one half of a girlfriends team never missed a chance to belittle her about anything.

and at least they're playing by the rules. not like in the season with the blond sister & dark-haired brother team, who smiled constantly. at one overnight stop (not a pit stop) he poked his head into the tent of the "bowling moms" team and then their alarm didn't go off. i believe to this day he turned it off. which, in my opinion, supports Ferengi rule of acquisition #48; The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.

spoilers for a 15 year old episode

what tv insider has to say about the final episode and what dominic keating had to say about it in a recent interview along with conner trinneer;
Apropos of the episode, I have always said it was clunky. But I have always sympathized with Brannon [Braga] and Rick [Berman] and them wanting to somehow honor not just our show, but the end of their tenure with the franchise. It wasn’t the best way to do it and clearly it upset Scott [Bakula] way more than we knew at the time. Remember when we did that 10-year reunion at CBS and he aired his grievance at that time. He was quite plainspoken that he felt we were shortchanged with that last episode and he wasn’t happy about it. But God bless Scott, he didn’t complain about anything. So, when he does say something like that you know that really got to him.

i wonder what would the history of star trek movies & shows had been like if they had the star trek phase II series in the late '70s.

for those who don't know or remember;
Star Trek: Phase II was the initial working title for what officially became titled Star Trek II, an unproduced American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry as a sequel to and continuation of the original Star Trek, which had run from 1966 to 1969. The plans for the series were first developed after several failed attempts to create a feature film based on the property, coupled with plans for a Paramount Television Service (PTS) as a fourth broadcast television network in the United States.

the whole history is at the wikipedia article.

where i speculate a bit )

thank your for coming to my TED talk on the history of star trek in an alternate timeline.

i dreamed that they had found lost episodes of TOS and were airing them n TV.

the first had kirk and spock on some planet for negotiations. spock what thankful there there were vulcan food rations; some kind of yogurt with chunks of what looked like gram cracker crumbs. it had hints of kirk/spock ship.
the second had uhura being challenged to some kind of drinking contest by a woman who was the leader of the planet of the week.
the third had kirk and spock travel back time to some inner city in the U.S. in the early '70s. kirk didn't know much about that era and was having spock explain the history of the time.

it wasn't until after i work up that i realized that kirk's comment about how he knew canadian history of the time, but not U.S. history of the era was weird because kirk was from iowa. and yet funny because shatner is from canada.

Fontana, who went professionally by “D.C.,” passed away “peacefully” on Monday after fighting a brief illness, the American Film Institute, where she was a senior lecturer, announced Tuesday in a press release obtained by PEOPLE.

The writer is credited with developing the Spock character’s backstory and “expanding Vulcan culture,” SyFy reported of her massive contribution to the beloved sci-fi series. Fontana was the one who came up with Spock’s childhood history revealed in “Yesteryear,” an episode in Star Trek: The Animated Series, on which she was both the story editor and associate producer.

As the outlet pointed out, Fontana was also responsible for the characters of Spock’s parents, the Vulcan Sarek and human Amanda, who were introduced in the notable episode “Journey to Babel.”

In fact, Fontana herself said that she hopes to be remembered for bringing Spock to life.

The writer is survived by husband Dennis Skotak, Variety reported, and the family is asking that donations be sent to either the Humane Society, Best Friends Animal Society or the American Film Institute in lieu of flowers.

Day 29 - Favorite Trek Quote
so many but i like reed's line of: "I've invested FAR too much time trying to figure you out, Mr. Tucker... I'm not about to accept that it was all for nothing." in the episode shuttle pod one.

Day 30 - Favorite Trek Series
i really don't know. i go back and forth between TNG, VOY & ENT. but the honest answer, if i'm honest with myself, is whatever one i'm watching at the time.
archersangel: (tired)

Day 27 - Character You Would Date
i done know. archer, most likely. maybe paris.

Day 28 - Name Your Own Starship
warsaw. because i'm of Polish decent & poland doesn't get enough respect.

for some reason i thought there was one named that or at least a warsaw class, but i can't find anything on it.

i once had a list of ship names (which apparently every trek fan did) and of the 8 or 10 i only remember warsaw, quicksilver and gold eagle. i think i had rum runner too,
most likely that would be some small patrol craft named for someone's several times great grandfather's boat they used to bring booze into the u.s. during Prohibition.
archersangel: (historic fiction)

Day 25 - Favorite Discovery Episode
never seen it.
but i'd like to substitute the animated series in place of it for this one. (it's like the old star trek magazine said, it's the forgotten trek show.)

yesteryear, where mucking around with the guardian of forever erases spock from the timeline & spock has to save his younger self. you see the kahs-wan maturity test and some of spock's boyhood. like all of TAS probably not canon.

Day 26 - Planet You Would Most Like To Visit
i'd say risa, but that's like las vegas times 20.
archersangel: (glitter)

Day 17 - Favorite Trek Novel
i like a few; spock's world, metamorphosis, a stitch in time, mosaic, the broken bow novelization. find a list of others here.

Day 18 - Favorite Non-Aligned Race
i don't know. but what happened with the barzan after the wormhole went kaput?
the breen are kind of interesting, mostly because they dress like leia in the bounty hunter outfit from return of the jedi we don't know much about them.
were the bynars non-alligned?
archersangel: (cheering)
explanation of this & the list of topics found here.

Day 5 - Saddest Event
yar's death tied with dax's.

Day 6 - Happiest Event
kirk not being dead in amok time. even spock thought so.

As for the bonus, found this on youtube. it's a segment from the old "new magazine" series prime time live from 1990 with deforest kelly talking about trek making a comeback.

as usual with these things i'll probably do 2 (maybe 3) a day because i don't get on DW every day.

also, some answers may overlap with the previous trek meme.

Day 1 - Favorite TOS episode
not really sure. balance of terror is pretty good for the tension & drama. it's interesting to compare it to the movie that inspired the episode; run silent, run deep.

Day 2 - Favorite Federation Race

i want to say humans, but that's a basic answer. although, basic is sometimes the best you can do.

“Star Trek: Picard” is bringing back some familiar faces.

During the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, it was revealed that Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan would reprising their roles from “Next Generation” and “Voyager” in Ryan’s case. Jonathan Del Arco will also appear, likely reprising his role as the Borg Hugh from “Next Generation.”

Previously announced cast members include Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway.

from [personal profile] rthstewart this is back from march because i don't check out her DW often.
If you’ve not followed the epic rants on Twitter, a white male pro author (who is apparently pretty good) and the Guardian suddenly discover Narnia fan fic and wildly praise his scintillating tale of the years before Jadis’ rule and the creation of the Stone Table. The article and a separate opinion piece bemoan that this brilliant story cannot be published nor the author compensated for his amazing work because there is that crotchety thing known as property rights in copyrighted material, in this case owned by the Lewis estate. But, the praise continues, this fan fic is SO good, maybe it's time to re-examine copyright laws!

Oh such a tragedy. Men extolled for writing fan fic (so much so that his friends start lobbying for the law to be changed) and women mocked.

she suggested that those who have written fan fic for a long time (or in my case, just dabble a lot) write a "few hundred words extolling your virtues as a fan fic or other creator in fandom."

so i did

portrait of an obscure writer by jo king

you may have stumbled across her work, but may not know her name. i met up with the the internet user known as archersangel at a local panaera bread where i find that she has entered into a self-professed "goth phase" dressed in all in the requisite black; tail coat, t-shirt, leggings, socks, converse high-tops & a piece of black lace holding back her long, wavy, chestnut hair sprinkled with silver. including round, black frame glasses. plus a fair amount of silver jewelry.

aangel, as she is sometimes known, got her start writing in the old [livejournal.com profile] sg1_five_things community, a.k.a the pentangular gate on live journal in in august 2007. "started as an anonymous poster & then used my blogspot open-id." where she would write 195 "more or less, i messed up on the numbering." pieces. mostly sg-1, but on occasion something for atlantis or universe. she was devastated when the community folded in november 2012 "i'd pour one out, but i don't drink." she commented sadly.

she admits that she was not the most popular poster, with a disregard for punctuation, capitalization & grammar. "i did get some nice replies & one person admitted to tearing up over 2 recurring dreams & 3 recurring nightmares janet fraiser has so i guess that was something."

during her time posting 5 things in 2009 aangel got a dreamwidth account and stumbled across [personal profile] synecdochic 's challenge to put her original character of jd neilson (the young clone of sg-1's jack o'neill from the episode fragile balance) into other fandoms while hitchhiking. she wrote 2 such stories, numbers 7 & 22 on this list.

after her five things run ended, archersangel resigned herself to never posting fic again. but then discovered a 3-scentnce fic-a-thon run by [personal profile] rthstewart in early 2013 and later that year one run by .[livejournal.com profile] caramelsilver aangel confesses to stretching the rules a little. "a run-on sentence is still a stenence." she has written about 3 dozen between the two over the years in a long list of fandoms; star trek (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, but as of now not ENT) star wars (the original trilogy & the prequels), stargate: sg-1, harry potter, the mummy (1999), a the mummy (1999)/amelia peabody crossover, real person fic "more like historical fiction really.", greek myth, batman (TAS & the burton era movies), buffy the vampire slayer tv series, little women (novel), & even a laura ingalls wilder/wild wild west (tv series) crossover.

after she comes back from refilling her black iced tea, i ask archerangel what other fandoms she might try her hand at. she thinks a moment while tapping a finger with an ebony colored fingernail against ink-stained lips. "maybe the mrs. murphy series by rita mae brown, the midnight louie series by carole nelson douglas, the cat who... series by lillian jackson braun, the sarah kelling series by charlotte macleod, the roma sub rosa series by steven saylor. ncis: new loreans, quantum leam, pehaps the amazing race." she shrugs her shoulders & shakes her head. "and whatever else catches my interest. i guess we'll see."

yes. i'm sure we will.
