thoughts on the bond movies
Apr. 14th, 2012 06:30 pmno long ago i re-read the fleming bond novels, which made me want to see the movies again.
note: i will only watch those without the new guy, the first 20 or so.
the first 3 movies had someone who was later dubbed by someone else. ursula andress in dr. no, daniela bianchi in from russia with love & gert frobe in goldfinger. the first two because of their strong accents & the third either because he couldn't speak english and had to do his lines phonetically or had a strong accent. (depending on the source)
the first fleix leiter was played by jack lord, who later went on to star in the original hawaii five-o. the character was played by a different actor nearly every time he appeared in a bond movie. the two exceptions are david hedison (live & let die and licence to kill) and jeffery wright (casino royale & quantum of solace)
8 actors have played the role(if you count the thunderball remake) 6 actors have played bond. the character didn’t appear in the brosnan era movies, instead they had jack wade as bond CIA contact in 2 movies. i wonder why they didn’t have fleix?
goldfinger is the first movie with a theme song using the movie’s title. dr. no had the bond them and FRWL had some sort of ‘60s belly dance music. this movie also has the first incidence of something showing the number 007.
only one ”bond girl” ever turned up in more than one movie. enuice gayson as sylvia trench in the beginning of both dr. no & from russia with love.
maud adams showed up as different characters; andrea anders in the man with the golden gun, & the title character in octopussy. she is also somewhere in the crowd at fisherman’s wharf in a view to a kill.
nearly all the movies ended near water; dr. no & FRWL were on boats, goldfinger ended with bond parachuting out over water & landing next to a pond. thunderball & you only live twice bond was in a raft on the ocean with the girl. in diamonds are forever he’s on a ocean liner. live & let die was on a train, but the “boss battle” was near water. OHMSS was road on a cliff that may have been overlooking water. the man with the golden gun was a junk at sea. he ended up in a escape pod in the ocean in the spy who loved me. he was on a boat with “the girl” FYEO. in octopussy he was on a luxury barge, in a view to a kill the climatic fight was on the golden gate bridge, but in the end he was in the shower with “the girl” (my brother points out that the credits rolled over a shot of the golden gate bridge) an outdoor fountain was the water at the end of the living daylights. he’s in a pool with one of the bond girls in licence to kill (but during the credits there’s some footage of some coastline). goldeneye had that big lake near the end (but sometimes i think they pushed the “water at the end” thing) in that tomorrow one (not fond of the title) they’re on the south china sea. in T.W.I.N.E had action on a sub underwater at the end. bond & jinx were in a hut by the ocean in die another day
live & let die was moore’s first outing as bond. it was still the suave bond & not so much the goofy spy movie of the 1970s bond. interesting bit of info; it’s jane seymour’s first movie.
OHMSS was lazenby’s first (& only) time as bond. i don’t think he did a bad job. true, he was a model & not an actor, but considering that he had to try to fill connery’s shoes he did well IMHO. too bad he was dropped (& there are a half dozen stories as to why) and will forever be known as double oh once. a couple of ski chase scenes & a crazy bobsled run are a few of the only highlights of this one IMHO.
riggs was a very good “bond girl”; smart, tough, could drive fast & was easy on the eyes. heaps of issues though, that they only touched on in the movie. in the novel her husband ran off with a good bit of her money & she had a baby who died from spinal meningitis.
movie info; louis armstrong performed the song that plays throughout the movie (we have all the time in the world) was the last one he did.
the best theme IMHO is nobody does it better (the spy who loved me). honorable mentions to goldeneye, the world is not enough & die another day.
for your eyes only is a mix of ideas and characters from various bond stories; the title is from a story collection (and one of the stories within) the idea of a woman avenging her parents’ murder is from that story, as is their name (the havelocks) but the daughter in the story was judy, not melina. the name of their killer is also the same. the colombo vs. kristatos thing is from a story called risco. bond & melina being pulled behind the motor boat over the coral for the sharks to get them is from the novel live & let die.
an unnecessary edition of the teen girl figure skater & her coach IMHO.
my brother pointed out that this isn't like a typical bond story; the bad guy isn't out for money or power, just to deliver the decoder (or whatever) to the soviets. bond doesn't even kill the bad guy.
M was not in this one as the actor (bernard lee) died just before production. out of respect for him the producers left M out of the movie. his lines were given to minister of defense.
dalton was bond twice. i wasn’t impressed with him. he was supposed to be a more ruthless bond, but after moore, most anyone would seem ruthless.
due to a poor box office for licence to kill, legal issues over bond (possibly due to that one story. see my bond novel thoughts) & death of longtime screenwriter richard maibaum, the next bond movie wouldn’t be for another 6 years. which brought us yet another actor in the role.
that was pierce brosnan. his first outing as bond was goldeneye, a leftover script from the dalton era. despite that, i’d have to say it’s my favorite of the bond movies. it was also the first bond movie i saw in the theater.
it’s interesting the 2 people from this (famke janssen & alan cumming) would later be in the x-men series. hallie berry (who’s in die another day) was in the series as well.
the next one (really don’t like the name, but can’t figure out what else it could’ve been called.) according to imdb.com it was originaly tomorrow never lies, but a typo changed things. tomorrow never comes was also considered (again according to imdb) this movie was interesting in the fact that the bad guy wanted world domination though information. michelle yeoh (wai lin) when first contacted about the part thought that they wanted her to be james bond (jane bond, i suppose) which she was very interested in doing. the producers quickly corrected her. a rumored movie starring her character never surfaced.
the world is not enough or T.W.I.N.E had an interesting twist as to who the bad guy was. and i think that we can agree that denise richards as a nuclear physicist is one of the biggest, possibly the biggest, miss-casting in the whole bond franchise. random info; T.W.I.N.E was not only the last bond movie that i saw in theaters, but the last movie i’ve seen in theaters.
die another day is the last of the brosnan bond movie & the last of the bond movies (as far as i’m concerned) the 20th official movie had references to most, if not all, of the others. not a bad movie, except for the half-dozen or so odd camera moves or edits. someone should’ve told the director that it was a bond movie, not a music video. once again the main “bond girl” (jinx) was supposed to star in her own movie but it never materialized.
thus ends my rambling thoughts on this subject.
note: i will only watch those without the new guy, the first 20 or so.
