trying to make a long story short here;
my dad is the manager of sorts for a bar in a one-horse town (technically it's a village) near here. several years back the owner fell down the stairs at home & is paralyzed form the waist down. due to the laziness/stupidity of the previous manager the bar has been closed since july of 2008.
everything's been straightened up & over the past few months dad's been fixing things little by little. he & my brother went to lowe's to get ceiling tile & decided to check out out the gas stoves (the kitchen is set up for gas appliances) and my brother was wondering about the differences between two of the ones they had. one of the workers came over and explained things. my dad said they weren't buying just then. the worker said: "i'll give you my card. that way i'll get a commission." he fished a card out of his pocket. on it was the name of one of my mother's relatives (mine too, but i think of them as my mother's) neither my dad nor my brother said anything. we haven't seen most of those relations since my mother's mother passed away in 1991.
my dad heard through the grapevine that he was studying to be a doctor. my brother commented; "guess that didn't work out." i think when the time comes to buy the stove my dad will mention the guy's name. i wonder what his reaction will be. i wonder if he even remembers this branch of the family.
