just found this out today. (the story from the new york times)  she wrote the cat who.... series & i think i have every single one. according to wikipedia there are 29 (#30 was canceled. probably due to any health issues the author my have had) and i have 2 of the 3 collections of short stories she wrote.

the first few books are set in an unnamed city. i always suspected chicago.  then (after the main character inherits a boatload of money from an old friend of his mother's) move to a small town far north of there near canada, i always suspected minnesota. the main character inherited a male siamese cat named koko (because there was no one to take him) from the victim in the first novel;  the art critic at the paper he worked for. then he inherited a female siamese cat named yum yum for the same reason (plus he figured koko needed cat companionship) from the victim in another one.
after awhile they got quite formulaic; someone is murdered (sometime more than one) it's usually someone the main character knows at least slightly. the main character's curiosity gets the better of him & he starts poking around.  koko digs up a clue or knocks over a book that ends up giving insight into the case. yum yum does little more than sit around & look pretty.
koko & yum yum are named after siamese cats the author had. apparently koko was smart & yum yum was just pretty. she had a few versions of koko. the first (or one of the early ones) was killed when she was living in an apartment building & she suspected a cat-hating neighbor.

this makes the second author of book series that i like who has passed. the first was charlotte mcleod author of the sarah kelling mystery novels. this just leaves carole nelson douglas, rita mae brown & elizabeth peters.

When did Charlotte McLeod go? I met her, many years ago, and she was kind and fun and a good person to talk with. And I loved her books.

I met her in the early '90s at an early Malice Domestic con; she bought a bottle of wine for the group of us at the same table at the award banquet, and talked a bit about how she loved gardening and tried to tuck a bit of herbcraft or gardening into her stories whenever she could. She was a delight.

I hadn't heard about LJB! I always loved her books. They do get very formulaic after a while, but the early ones had some particularly good audio book versions that got me through more than one long drive.

I used to read those on alert when I was an ICBM crew commander. It passed many a night while I did not launch nukes at the Russians...so sad. Her stories were lovely
