i was going to do a post this week about how it's been a year since i went to dragon-con (see the dragon con '09 tag on my blogspot blog) but ended up going at that last moment. mainly because scott bakula & avery brooks were there. saw shatner, stewart & mulgrew last year so that's all five now.
ETA: all my blogspot d-con post can be found under the dragon-con '10 tag.

to preface this, i didn't meet anyone at this thing. (i'm a coward) so these are just my observations.

preface #2; if you're a huge fan of michael shanks (as in love him no matter what) you should skip this post.

i saw michael shanks at two panels & he comes across as a big, smarmy jackass. true i've seen this in videos of other cons that he's done, but it comes across more in a "live" setting. i don't know how his wife puts up with it. although she seems to be a similar type, tossing back barbs & insults as soon as he issues them. i wonder if they're like this at home (with 3 little kids yet!) or this is a stage persona?
i wonder if it is. some time ago i saw a vid on youtube of a con that MS was at & he said something scathing about his wife and got the big gasp that crowds can do. he said something like "our friends are like; how can you say stuff like that? shut up, you don't live with us, you don't know." (totally paraphrasing) but i think its telling that at the second panel his wife didn't sit with him. someone (debradownsth from the sy-fy bboard, i think) wrote a note & gave it to lexa at dragon-con a few years ago when both were there saying that she though he was rude and disrespectful towards his wife. i doubt he ever saw it.
while i still love daniel, it will be hard for me to filter out MS. especially in the later seasons when more of his attitude came in to the role.

on the other side of the coin is scott bakula. i'm happy to report that he seems to be as advertised; a nice guy & a good human being. he was respectful towards dean stockwell in their QL panel. he became a little emotional when talking about how dean influenced him not only as an actor, but has a human being (or so i gathered). in scott's "solo" panel with garrett wang as the moderator (he's in charge of the trek programing. kind of a long story. comment if you want to know) garrett said that on the last day of VOY everyone was in a bad mood because kate mulgrew was & scott said something like that would never have happened on the ENT set because he's rarely in a bad mood. i was like; damn! we need to clone this guy.
my brother said that the problem with archer was he seemed to be trying to be everyone's friend instead of the captain. i've noticed this during the ENT re-watch. he seems to be calling his crew by their first names more than the other captains.

but all of this is my opinion, i could be wrong.
