archersangel: the first of the flock (dreamsheep)

i did this a few times & decided to re-post it.

not just for the holidays, but for any gift giving occasion.

edwardrhamiliton.com the place for books. some of the books are slightly damaged & if you don't mind that these are good bargains. i've bought from them for years and really like this company. most of their orders ship within 48 hours of them getting your order so i wouldn't do last-minute stuff with them. (it's been several years since i've bought from them.)

sock dreams the place for socks & stockings. i've never used them, but heard many good things. if you, or someone on your list, likes unique socks and/or stockings this is the place to shop.

humon on deviantart (i think she deleted her account) who does scandinavia and the world has some merchandise now. (never got anything from here.)

booklender which is like netflix for books. they have various rental plans for 2 to 20 books at a time. take as long as you want to read then & then ship them back. they're all paperback editions, they also have MP3 & CD audio books and children's books. you can even have a combo plan. they usually have a 50% off the first month thing going on, so you use that to try it.

the guy who does rejected princesses has posters for sale, calendars & cards too (some from the blog, some from the books). and now he has a RP book with a bunch of new entries. (never bought from here.)

adagio tea sells loose-leaf teas & tea paraphernalia. they have all kinds; black, decaf, green, etc. & even fandom blends! (it's better to search for the one you're interested in, than to look through their list) there could be more than one for what you're interested in. for example; there are a couple for daniel jackson of SG-1, so read the flavor description to see if it's something you might like. they sell sample tins that make about 5 cups (except for some which are 10 or the ice tea, which is 6 pouches that make 40oz), so you can try it before committing to a larger amount.
they even tell you at what temperature & how long to steep the teas for.
make sure you read the whole page for the tea you're interested in, as some are higher in caffeine than others. (never got anything from them)

uncommon goods "If you're on the hunt for quirky, unusual gifts that are guaranteed crowd-pleasers, you've come to the right spot." gifts for men, women (both have subcategories like dad, mom, husband, wife & so on) geeks, the home & kids, plus many things can be personalized. (never ordered from them.)

snag tights similar to sock dreams, but 80% tights/pantyhose. the rest is leggings, shorts that prevent chafing, underwear, shirts, with some socks & clothes. for their tights/pantyhose they have 2 size guides; one for if you have a prominent stomach and/or butt & or for if you have a flat stomach and/or butt. they say they've tested their tights/pantyhose on sizes 1 to 34 and they show women of varrious body types, so you can get an idea of how things will look on.(never got anything from them)

thigh society anti-chafe shorts (not shapewear) that can be used for working out, sleepwear, under a dress/skirt for modesty or loungewear. they have sheer, semi-sheer & mostly opaque styles that can be worn as underwear or over it. they come in 3 leg lengths (5, 7 & 9 inch), sizes XS/S to 5/6XL & several colors. there's even a style with pockets. (never got from them)

BENICIA, Calif. — Han Solo may be a hunk. But "Pan Solo" is a hunk of bread.

That's what a bakery in the San Francisco Bay Area has dubbed its 6-foot bread sculpture of the Star Wars character as he appeared after being frozen in carbonite in The Empire Strikes Back.

Hannalee Pervan and her mother, Catherine Pervan, co-owners of One House Bakery in Benicia, Calif., spent weeks molding, baking and assembling the life-sized sculpture using wood and two types of dough, including a type of yeastless dough with a higher sugar content that will last longer.

Take Back Halloween is on a mission: a mission to make the world safe for creative and empowering costumes.

You won’t find costumes for Eleanor of Aquitaine or Hatshepsut in the stores. You won’t find costumes for powerful goddesses like Ishtar or the Morrigan. But you will find them at Take Back Halloween, the only website in the world devoted to showing women how to dress up as famous heroines, geniuses, queens, and goddesses. Without sewing!

Take Back Halloween isn’t a store.

We’re not selling any of this stuff. We’re a resource guide: we come up with the costume designs, explain what you’ll need to pull off the look, and provide links to where you can buy the various components. Our overall approach is about creating great no-sew costumes with stuff that is readily available: either already in your closet, on sale at eBay or some other retailer, or in stock at a costume store. See our “how to use this website” page for a quick rundown on how it works.

Plus, we include accurate historical information about every single figure. Thinking about what people wore is an incredibly fun way to learn history.

Despite our name, we’re not just about Halloween.

Since Take Back Halloween was launched in 2010, it has become the leading online resource for women and girls’ DIY historical costuming. People use our site for occasions all year long: Black History Month, Women’s History Month, cultural festivals, school presentations, historical reenactments, and more. Educators even use our site as a novel way to teach history. We get millions of visits from all over the world.

they also have a historical costume contest in their blog section.

Open call to anyone still listening - archiving old LJ comms;
If you modded LiveJournal communities back in the day, please consider archiving them to Dreamwidth NOW. So much 2000s internet history lives there, and if LJ falls off the internet (as it very well might, depending on how things go in Russia in the near future), links will break and vast amounts of it will be lost. Wayback Machine only captures public posts; a Dreamwidth import can pull in locked posts and comments, and allow people to view them by joining the comm.

Follow the link for additional help and suggestions.

someone on one of the forums i look at linked to this game where you have to put events into historical order on a timeline.

you start out with one card; queen elizabeth II; born for example.
the next card is the magna carta; signed, that's before then, so you click and drag it to put it there.
then the u.s. civil war; ended, that's after the magna carta & before her birth, so it goes there.
the next one is elvis; died, that's after QE2's birth, so it goes there.
the next card is the invention of the telegraph & it gets tricky because you're not sure if that was before the u.s civil war or not, so you put it before & hope it's right.

you get three strikes, then you're out.

it will tell you what your streak was before you struck out & if you do a few games, it will let you know what your longest streak was.

you're responsible for your own time management. decide if you have time to waste before starting this game.

If you ever hear a “caw-caw!” sound in an Aldi grocery store, don’t worry: A crow hasn’t gotten trapped in the rafters. Rather, you’ve just overheard a member of the Aisle of Shame (AOS) Facebook group sending out a call in their natural habitat.

If another CAW-CAW! rings out in response, expect enthusiastic chatter, hugs, and selfies to follow. AOS fans love interacting online, but they get a special joy out of finding each other in the place that started it all.

The “Aisle of Shame” is the unofficial name Aldi enthusiasts have given the discount store’s middle aisle, home to a weekly rotation of curious edible and non-edible products available only while supplies last. We’re talking everything from vegan lasagna made from lentils to a churro maker and apple cinnamon latte-flavored dog biscuits.

--snip--

The group’s in-store “caw caw” arose organically from a handful of online posts in which members brainstormed ways to find each other in the store. (It won out over more sedate options such as asking, “Where’s the ranch?” That’s how members of the Aldi Nerd Facebook group find each other; the correct response is “where the deer and the antelope play.”)

an update on places i've posted about before.

steady clothing ones are now $2.50, with adjustable ear loops. 4 sizes (youth, medium, large & x-large) with fewer/different prints than before.

mask club no longer does the one a month for $9.99 thing & raised their prices from $13.99 to $14.99. still ones size fits most ear loop kind with a boatload of categories; comics, peanuts, harry potter, star trek, US state flags, international flags, the 2020 election, plus solid colors and patterns & more.
they have a kid's size and patterns too.

teepublic are still $10 for a once size fits most adult size with ear loops with a lot of designs.

first go to plan your vote on the NBC news websiste.
Mark your calendars. Everything you need to know about mail-in and early in-person voting, including the first day you can cast your ballot in the 2020 election.
and then follow [personal profile] twistedchick 's advice;
--Officially request an absentee ballot from your local Board of Elections (usually at the county level). --Look up where the Board of Elections is located, and where there are official B of E drop boxes for ballots -- usually in government buildings. --Fill out your ballot as soon as it arrives (they are almost guaranteed to be very close to deadline). --Take it to an official Board of Elections drop box and put it in. Or take it to the Board of Elections office. That's it. Avoid using the mail -- if you are going to mail it back, do so before Oct. 20, because otherwise it's likely to be delayed until it is too late.
i heard from someone who's husband has been a mail carrier for 20 years that packages are being given priority. so if you can't take it to a drop box, maybe put it in a small box & mail it?

Dark circles under your eyes, blacks that don’t match, staying up so late you go to bed with the sunrise, black sweatpants with Halloween socks, chipped nail polish and smudged eyeliner, music with sad lyrics. You’re tired and I get it.

there's also advice from your goth auntie.

los angeles apparel was forced to shut down after 300 works tested positive for COVID-19 & 4 died. i regret suggesting people buy from them. ETA: they had refused to close in late june.

in better, i hope, mask news if you want geeky masks maskclub has a bunch of officially licensed things in a lot categories; comics, peanuts, harry potter, star trek, US state flags, international flags, the 2020 election, plus solid colors and patterns & more. $13.99 (or if you sign up for 1 mask a month $9.99) one size, ear loops & a kids size too.

teepublic also has a bunch of geeky masks as well as more basic ones. $10, one size ear loops, pleated double layer or basic.

tee fury has a bunch of geek ones. $15, ear loops, one size.

ETA2:a review of teefury from[livejournal.com profile] nialla42
I bought one from TeeFury, and I can't recommend them. It's a double layer of two different materials, probably because they needed a different type to hold the transfer image. There's no bonding between the layers, so the first time I opened my mouth, the inner layer went into my mouth. Nope.

[personal profile] goss  is looking for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour who are still in fandom (which one is not specified. maybe just in general?)
But over the years, many BIPOC have left these platforms or Fandom altogther. And I really miss having those kinds of interactions, and hearing these particular voices. I'm curious about how many of us are out here still, whether actively posting on DW or simply lurking. Maybe you are wondering too! So I am putting up this poll, in the hopes of reaching out to and connecting with as many BIPOC fans here on DW as possible.
go vote in their poll.

first of all don't feel guilty if you can't be out there protesting for whatever reason, health, family obligations, fear of large crowds, Etc.
from [tumblr.com profile] wilwheaton to quote LizzoBeEating, a Black woman on Twitter:

“Resistance is NOT a one lane highway. Maybe your lane is protesting, maybe your lane is organizing, maybe your lane is counseling, maybe your lane is art activism, maybe your lane is surviving the day.

Do NOT feel guilty for not occupying every lane. We need all of them.”

[personal profile] princessofgeeks has a link to 75 things white people can do for racial justice.

and from [personal profile] twistedchick how to spot misinformation about the protests.
