My mom still has a flip phone. With each G upgrade, she got a letter from our provider about coming in to get a new phone. She didn't, but eventually they just mailed a new one to her. It's enough for what she needs, so she doesn't really care about smart phones. She's also got really bad arthritis in her hands, so it's harder to use a touchscreen sometimes.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S8+, which is now five years old. It gets the job done, but the battery isn't holding the charge well. My dad got one of the cheaper versions the same year, but he doesn't use it as much as I do so the battery doesn't seem to have any issues. They make great phones at all price points, and when I eventually have to get a new one, I'll go with a Samsung again.
The apps are where you can have a lot of fun. Check to see if your local library has Overdrive. If so, you can use the Libby app to checkout ebooks and audiobooks for free.
I got the Plus size phone because my vision isn't all that great, so it's easier for me to read with it. Definitely couldn't fit it in my bra though. :)
