random NCIS: NOLA thoughts

i occasionally watch an episode of NCIS: NOLA as i come across them on TNT, or wherever, because i miss seeing scott bakula not much is interesting on tv.

the one i caught the other day was sic semper tyranis where members of different separatist groups get together & steal some missile for nefarious reasons. pride goes undercover, using an on-line identity developed by the ATF, within the group to stop them. at the end percy informs the team that other separatists know he was law enforcement & it's implied that they're looking to get him. this is never mentioned again.

it could be because that was the season where they wrote brody out & the idea just didn't come to fruition. i forget how many times that has happened on TV. like with the reetou on stargate: sg-1. they made it seem like we would see more from them, but never did.

also, this is the episode where pride gets the bar & said he wants to call it WCFA (with charity for all), but i can't find anything about that anywhere. they ended up calling it the tru tone, which was on the sign outside as dr. wade comes in.

in other ncis news; hawaii has been canceled. sidney is still on, but apparently it's just on paramount+ in australia. and there will be a series about young gibbs (from the original series) & his time as a young agent. and another spinoff with some characters from the original series.

CBS is milking a cash cow until the udders fall off.

random ncis: nola thoughts

i caught the episode a changed woman on TNT (Pop? one of those) and sasha broussard asked if she had reformed herself years earlier, could something had happen between her & pride? he said no.

spoilers for the final episodes )

also, there's a ncis: sydney now? ncis: hawaii is still on, so this new development twists the knife more.

fan nicknames

so for the NCIS franchise some fans have nicknames for the series themselves.

the original NCIS is original recipe.
L.A. is extra crispy.
N.O.L.A. is cajun flavor.

so what is hawaii? tropical flavor? pineapple? coconut?

still hope it fails.

the last episode of NCIS: NOLA

i finally got around to watching it & had some thoughts.

it definitely felt like a series ending, but it also felt like a season ending. i don't know how far in advance the writers knew it was going to end.

spoilers )
anyway, down with NCIS: hawaii!

bleh!

so in last season's NCIS: NOLA, they were setting up for the return of a bad guy from a previous season. then COVID hit & they season was cut a bit short (by 2-3 episodes, i think).

this season, while dealing with the usual plot-lines, also had COVID-related stuff & i didn't think that particular development would come up. well, in the most recent new episode from a few weeks back it did. along with a huge new development. but this episode ended with a "to be continued" & the final episode of the series is going to be may 23, so i don't know if they're having more beyond this second part or the rug got pulled out from under them before they could craft a proper ending for the series.

ETA: just went looking & there will be 4 episodes starting on may 2. still don't know if they will get a series ending episode or it's just a "we thought we'd get another season" one.

(insert curse words here)

CBS is closing up shop on one of its three NCIS dramas.

NCIS: New Orleans, the youngest show in the franchise, will end with its current seventh season. The series finale of the Scott Bakula-led drama will air May 16 on CBS.

“It has been our sincere pleasure and honor to work on this show and with this incredible cast and crew for over 150 episodes,” said executive producers Christopher Silber and Jan Nash. “As disappointed as we are to see NOLA end, we couldn’t be prouder of the work we’ve done and are grateful to the spectacular and resilient Crescent City that embraced us for seven wonderful years.”

more here.

it's not a big surprise, considering the rating have been falling for a while. but like i said awhile back, since NCIS has been going on for so long (19 yeas now) if any of the others fall short, they look like failures.

so instead of supporting their current NCIS shows CBS is now starting a new one set in hawaii. basically hawaii; 5-0 reinvented. i hope it flops.

ETA: i blame CBS putting bull in their old time slot right after NCIS. for the first two season it was doing good with 12 million plus viewers an episode (second season ratings here) they they moved it to 10 pm and they were only getting 8 million to 11 million (third season ratings) and things began to fall off from there.
bull didn't need that time slot, they could've had it at 10 pm or on another night. it had a guy from NCIS, if people liked him they would go watch it. moving NCIS: NOLA to sundays half-way thru last season to follow NCIS: LA didn't help and made the problem worse.

returning TV

a small bright spot in this bleak year.

i was surprised to see the amazing race on the other day. we watch the CBS evening news 6-7 days a week and there was not one ad for it. unlike stuff like all rise last season where they'd have at lest one ad per commercial break.

so i looked up NCIS: NOLA & that is coming back nov. 8 with an episode dealing with COVID-19. no idea if it will have people CGI-ed in scenes to keep people apart as was speculated this summer for returning TV shows.

the show my brother watches, the rookie, will probably. return in 2021.

The may be spoilers.

spoiler-ish )

just looked up the ratings and the move to sunday hasn't helped so far. and the fact that they didn't come back from the "winter break" until the middle of feb didn't do them any favors.

major spoilers for the nov. 5 episode! because i can't get links and the cut tag to work together.

what is going on and who's effected. more on the spoiler )
also this may be the last season, unless rating improve ASAP.

ETA: maybe to help that, starting in feb. the show will air on sun. right after NCIS: LA.
This means CBS has returned to a multi-hour block of NCIS programming, rather than three separate episodes, which hasn't happened since 2016, when NOLA moved to the 10 p.m. ET Tuesday slot.

i think that really hurt the show, which had so-so ratings at the time.
according to tvseriesfinale.com in season 2 they averaged 12.98 million viewers & in season 3 it was 9.574 million total viewers & has been falling ever since.
cinema blend compares this to NBC having all of their chicago shows (fire, med & p.d.) all on the same night, which helped their ratings. i can only hope that this experiment will be a success and CBS will do the same.

The Guardian Profile Challenge

from [personal profile] rthstewart this is back from march because i don't check out her DW often.
If you’ve not followed the epic rants on Twitter, a white male pro author (who is apparently pretty good) and the Guardian suddenly discover Narnia fan fic and wildly praise his scintillating tale of the years before Jadis’ rule and the creation of the Stone Table. The article and a separate opinion piece bemoan that this brilliant story cannot be published nor the author compensated for his amazing work because there is that crotchety thing known as property rights in copyrighted material, in this case owned by the Lewis estate. But, the praise continues, this fan fic is SO good, maybe it's time to re-examine copyright laws!

Oh such a tragedy. Men extolled for writing fan fic (so much so that his friends start lobbying for the law to be changed) and women mocked.

she suggested that those who have written fan fic for a long time (or in my case, just dabble a lot) write a "few hundred words extolling your virtues as a fan fic or other creator in fandom."

so i did

portrait of an obscure writer by jo king

you may have stumbled across her work, but may not know her name. i met up with the the internet user known as archersangel at a local panaera bread where i find that she has entered into a self-professed "goth phase" dressed in all in the requisite black; tail coat, t-shirt, leggings, socks, converse high-tops & a piece of black lace holding back her long, wavy, chestnut hair sprinkled with silver. including round, black frame glasses. plus a fair amount of silver jewelry.

aangel, as she is sometimes known, got her start writing in the old [livejournal.com profile] sg1_five_things community, a.k.a the pentangular gate on live journal in in august 2007. "started as an anonymous poster & then used my blogspot open-id." where she would write 195 "more or less, i messed up on the numbering." pieces. mostly sg-1, but on occasion something for atlantis or universe. she was devastated when the community folded in november 2012 "i'd pour one out, but i don't drink." she commented sadly.

she admits that she was not the most popular poster, with a disregard for punctuation, capitalization & grammar. "i did get some nice replies & one person admitted to tearing up over 2 recurring dreams & 3 recurring nightmares janet fraiser has so i guess that was something."

during her time posting 5 things in 2009 aangel got a dreamwidth account and stumbled across [personal profile] synecdochic 's challenge to put her original character of jd neilson (the young clone of sg-1's jack o'neill from the episode fragile balance) into other fandoms while hitchhiking. she wrote 2 such stories, numbers 7 & 22 on this list.

after her five things run ended, archersangel resigned herself to never posting fic again. but then discovered a 3-scentnce fic-a-thon run by [personal profile] rthstewart in early 2013 and later that year one run by .[livejournal.com profile] caramelsilver aangel confesses to stretching the rules a little. "a run-on sentence is still a stenence." she has written about 3 dozen between the two over the years in a long list of fandoms; star trek (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, but as of now not ENT) star wars (the original trilogy & the prequels), stargate: sg-1, harry potter, the mummy (1999), a the mummy (1999)/amelia peabody crossover, real person fic "more like historical fiction really.", greek myth, batman (TAS & the burton era movies), buffy the vampire slayer tv series, little women (novel), & even a laura ingalls wilder/wild wild west (tv series) crossover.

after she comes back from refilling her black iced tea, i ask archerangel what other fandoms she might try her hand at. she thinks a moment while tapping a finger with an ebony colored fingernail against ink-stained lips. "maybe the mrs. murphy series by rita mae brown, the midnight louie series by carole nelson douglas, the cat who... series by lillian jackson braun, the sarah kelling series by charlotte macleod, the roma sub rosa series by steven saylor. ncis: new loreans, quantum leam, pehaps the amazing race." she shrugs her shoulders & shakes her head. "and whatever else catches my interest. i guess we'll see."

yes. i'm sure we will.

a grab bag of things

1. this is such a quite area. i've always lived in rural areas, usually far way from other house. but other than cars playing music loudly & kids screeching when play, it's so quiet.
the new neighbor is a single mother with 2 or 3 kids (another woman with 2 or 3 kids helped her move in & i don't know who's kids were who's) who spends 90% of the day yelling at them.

2. the presidential book reading project is going slow. 2 years & 20 books read. it helps that 1 guy was president twice, one book covered 3 guys i'm not reading anything on like 4 of them. but it's hard to find anything on booklender & they drop the ones i do find because they don't have enough of the title to justify keeping it. at this rate it will take me another 2 years to get through this.

3. flan is gross. i need to remember that.

4. panara bread got rid of a lot of stuff. their cinnamon roll, cheese danish, cobblestone & bear claw. now they have a different cinnamon roll with vanilla icing, cheese brittany, cherry brittany & some kind of chocolate sandwich cookie that are hard & not soft like a gob.
had the new cinnamon roll, cheese brittany and chocolate thing, hated all of them. basically the only good stuff they have is the bread & bagels.

5. in one of the last episodes of NCIS: NOLA agent khoury brought pride coffee in those paper to-go cups. he took it despite being a coffee snob who only drinks coffee he makes himself in early seasons. is this not in the show bible? and i hate when people pick up a cup on a TV show or in a move to drink something & it's obviously empty.

NCIS: NOLA dream

i don't think i've ever had an NCIS: NOLA dream before in the five-ish years the show as been on. i've had dreams about scott bakula, but that doesn't count.

anyway, it was inspired by recent episodes because it had something to do with hannah's latest mess. there was a box with a bunch of junk & tree electronic devices of some sort in like evidence bags that she needed. but some other agency (FBI? CIA? NSA? IRS?) came and took two, but missed one for some reason.

i took that one & slipped it into pride's suit jacket pocket when the other agency people weren't looking. not much more happened other than some flirting with pride.

NCIS: NOLA S5 E15

there's a scene where they're chasing after the bad guy's henchman in an abandoned parking garage.
lasalle picks up gregorio, who was after him on foot, in a car. as they go down the ramps, i think; is this a tokyo drift reference? (lucas black was in the fast & the furious: tokyo drift in '05)

gregorio then says something like "you're getting too close." (meaning the walls) lasalle says: "i know what i'm doing." i'm like: it is a reference.

just outside the parking garage lasalle slides, dare i say drifts, into the running henchman. gets out of the car & says: "yeah. i still got it." *facepalm* even the car he was using looked like the kind of car they use for that.

to be honest, i'd rather have star trek references. i mean you have a trek captain as the star & a producer, lavar burton directs episodes & guest stared. tim russ guest stared once, but the only reference i can recall is sebastian's phone ringtone being the TNG theme.

and does all of this death stuff have to do with the fact that the creator/executive producer gary glasberg passed away in 2016 and d'wayne swear, technical advisor & inspiration for pride as well as the series in general, passed last year?
