fandom pairing nicknames

a tumblr user [tumblr.com profile] yuttikkele (warning for bright green on that person's blog), who's normally a gamer, started watching star trek: TOS recently and picked up on the kirk/spock vibes. they thought maybe they were one of the few to notice it, but then found out that's not true. now they know about kirk/spock fic and how it lead to slash as most people know it today. not to mention star trek leading to fanfic writing in general. people mentioned them being one of the lucky 10,000, which they didn't know about either

the comments are 99% supportive (there are always some jerks), but while reading some of them i discovered that some people call the kirk/spock "the premise" which i never heard before. maybe this is just a tumblr thing. i do not know.
admittedly; i never got deep into trek fandom, not to mention k/s slash (or any slash). but i suppose my on-line meanderings never lead to discovering that before.

i guess i was one of the 10,000 that day.

The Premise was actually a very old code name for the K/S slash, IIRC.

It's ancient. No exact date on first use, but first known use in print was 1975. Slash became the much more common term by late 80s into the 90s.

I got into fandom about that time, and only heard slash used, not The Premise, which I learned about much later from some of the Trek elders. They had to use it as code because at that time they could risk a lot by even discussing the possibility of gay men. It was still illegal and considered a mental illness, so straight women could lose custody of their children if it was discovered they were talking about "mentally ill queers".
