1. What do you consider your current main fandom? (This can include hobbies and collecting. Anything you feel fannish about!)
probably star trek (nothing after ENT). because i watch an episode of one of the series now and then on pluto tv.

2. What was your first fandom?
star trek: tos. some of my earliest memories is watching it on tv.

3. Do you have any favorite headcanons or fan theories?
one of mine; vulcans are more likely to conceive a child during pon farr*. probably because of some hormonal thing.

4. Have you ever created fanworks?
just on the old 5 things stargate LJ & the 3-sentence fic-a-thon every year.

5. Are you still active in any old fandoms?
not really. just when something comes up during the 3-sentence fic-a-thon.

*they mate at other times too. when it seems "logical" to do so. mostly to try to conceive. but also to strengthen the bond with their spouse.

1. Do you like to spend time outdoors?
no.

2. What is your favorite flower?
i'm not sure i have one.

3. Any favorite warm weather activities?
staying inside.

4. Have you ever kept a garden? If so, what did you grow?
a long time ago we (our mom, mostly) had a vegetable garden with the usual stuff; tomatoes, corn, onions, green peppers, potatoes, etc. & a flower garden with sunflowers, marigolds, pansies and some kind of wildflower mix (according the the seed packet).

5. Do you know how to swim?
no. fat floats though.
i suppose i "know" in theory; we had a 9-week semester of swimming in freshman & sophomore years of high school.

R.I.P ivorygates

found out via princessofgeeks that apparently ivorygates passed away earlier this month. she had not been in good health for awhile now, but it is still a shock.

i've been subscribed to her DW the whole time (or nearly so) i've been on DW (2009). i always enjoyed her comments about stargate; sg-1, both the show & about the actors/writers/producers.

i didn't know her as well as some of you did, but i may have been reading her journal back when i was an anonymous commenter on LJ.

words are always inadequate at a time like this and mine are failing me. so i'll say: rest in peace ivorygates, i hope the afterlife is filled with your favorite things.

currently reading Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky.

the paramount movie channel on pluto tv has patriot game often, so probably that.

3. What television series are you currently watching?
a mix of things on pluto tv; games shows, star trek (tos, tng, ds9, voy. they don't have ent right now) ask this old house, & this old house.

other than DW & LJ, i don't read blogs.

5. What social media do you belong to and check often?
DW & LJ mostly. some reddit things (r//thriftstorehauls & r/dumpsterdiving).

in the previous entry i said that our phones have not had any updates in a few months (brother says at least 4).

well, today either a notification popped up or he went looking for updates & we got them. and then some, i think we got all of the security updates one after the other.
no user interface updates as of yet. which is probably good, we never like how they change things.

my brother read that towards the end of a phone's life they only get updates quarterly, and not monthly (or whenever it was). so that's just great [/sarcasm].

i have been reading about various people having issues with their phones & it reminded me that i did not do a post for our 3 year phone anniversary.

in the 2 year anniversary post my brother was worried about the battery life of the phones. well, it turns out that the main problem is him using the phones to look up stuff. now that he is aware (& trying to cut back) the battery life is better.

but now he can't get the phones to update, security or software, i forget which. they are supposed to have software updates for 5 years & security updates for 4 (or is that the other way around?).
he's tried everything; looking up troubleshooting guides, various phone forums & even doing a chat with samsung tech support. still nothing.

this has soured him on future samsung phones & he is considering google phones for when we need to move on from these.

1. What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)?
i was doing comments with an Open-ID thing on DW & zats_clear was like do you want a code to join DW? (you needed a code circa 2009 because too many people joining at once would overload the system), i said; sure, why not? & that's how i ended up here (7-15-09).
for LJ i didn't to be anonymous any more, did an Open-ID thing (6-23-09) & made a free account in aug. 2016.

2. How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to?
on DW 32 (some do not have anyone posting),on LJ 23. but like only 3-4 have anyone who posts.

3. Do you have a favorite community or one you check out often to see what's new?
anything book related.

4. How did you pick your user name?
it was a holdover from the bboards at startrek.com. someone said the female fans of captain archer should be call archer's angels & a new username was created (i forget the one i had before that)

5. If you could change your user name, would you?
probably. do not know to what though.

1. Have you ever watched illusion magic? Close-up, or in a stage show, or on television? Did it work for you?
there was a guy doing close up stuff at the opening of a subway (no joke) that was doing stuff near my mom & me when we were in line.

2. Have you ever wished on a star, or a lucky cat, or a coin in a wishing well? Did it work in some way?
i've wished on a star & it never came true. but once i did a "blow out the birthday candles & make a wish" thing that did come true.

3. Have you ever cast a spell, made a love charm, or tried a curse? Did it work in some way?
no.

4. Are there any other traditional superstitions you pay attention to? Do they work in some way?
i try to avoid the 13^th of anything. especially friday the 13^th. not sure who well it works.

5. Would you want major magical powers like in a fantasy story? Which powers, and how would you use them?
maybe something do do with the weather?

changed DW layout again

this new one is Dreamer for Dusty Foot by timeasmymeasure. it took a bit to find a layout and colors (the main color & the links & stuff) that i like.
long ago when i found a layout color/theme that i liked, i would change the link colors and stuff. but the older i get, the less i want to bother with stuff like that.

remembered to center the header image and select "don't tile" this time.

The Tudor canon typically starts with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, before speeding on to Henry VIII and the Reformation. But this leaves out the family's obscure Welsh origins, the ordinary man known as Owen Tudor who would fall (literally) into a Queen's lap and later her bed. It passes by the courage of Margaret Beaufort, the pregnant thirteen-year-old girl who would help found the Tudor dynasty, and the childhood and painful exile of her son, the future Henry VII. It ignores the fact that the Tudors were shaped by their past, those parts they wished to remember and those they wished to forget.

this is a very interesting book that covers not only the major tudor figures (henry VIII, mary I, elizabeth I), but minor family members & touches on some of the other royals (henry VI, edward IV, some french kings) that were around during various times.

of course there is a part about richard III & the fate of edward V and his brother richard, the author doesn't come right out and say who might be responsible. although, i got the feeling she was hinting that friends/followers of richard III were responsible. she said that henry VII was only guilty of not investigating what happened to them. the problem was if he proved they were killed, most likely a cult of worship would have focused on them. like with henry VI & similarly if richard III had said they had died of sickness, or depression, or that friends/followers of the future henry VII killed them there would've been a a cult of worship then.

hidden in the author's notes was that the richard III ~~defense~~ society paid for a forensic psychology study of richard III and they found that he supposedly had a strong sense of right and wrong and most likely had edward V and his brother richard hidden away for their own safety.
i do not believe it.
1. i can not imagine that kind of thing staying secret very long at the time.
2. their mother, elizabeth woodville, was told they were dead.
3. the skeletons of two boys about the ages the princes were when they died were discovered buried at the bottom of a staircase in the tower which was mentioned by someone who claimed they knew what happened to them.

the moving the clocks one hour ahead thing is happening saturday night/early sunday.

my usual thing about it; most electronics will do it automatically, but stuff like stoves & microwaves will not. unless you have some super fancy, connected to the internet, kind of thing.

some forums and bboards have something in time setting about DST in effect. so look at where you post to see if they do. for example, DW doesn't have that. they have pick your time zone & if you want the time display in 12 hour (am/pm) or 24 hour.

1. Do you know of any other words for snow? What's your favourite and why?
well, flurry refers a certain way snow blows around. so that probably does not count.

2. What's your ideal temperature range for winter?
it would be cold, but not too cold. mid to high 30s(f) is fine. but when you get to freezing 32(f) it is too cold.

3. Favourite winter activity? What about it makes it your favourite?
staying indoors. which is also my favorite summer activity.

4. What are three things you can't do without when winter arrives?
warmth, a heavy coat & gloves.

5. Do you have favourite winter holiday activities?
i do not not have any.

Ao3 is down again

AO3 is down for updates, or maintenance, and this community (ao3_isdown ) is for those who want to write & read something while it is down.

and because the rules are in the style of threesentenceficathon i'm using that tag for any i might do.

How long will it go?
Prompts until AO3 is looking stable again + small buffer, fills can be made for another week after that.

if you give a (wo)man a fish (sandwich)

it is currently lenten season & that means all the restaurants bring out their seafood offerings*.

i did not intend to try wendy's fish sandwich on tuesday, i was going to get their asiago chicken sandwich, but saw they had a fish sandwich & thought; why not?
it was pretty good; the coating was crispy (panko breading), the tartar sauce was decent & the lettuce crisp. but it had pickles, which i don't think belong on a fish sandwich (just in the tartar sauce). i do not like pickles to begin with & should've given them to my brother.

another fish ~~story~~ sandwich; i had gotten one a few days before from one of the local convenience stores that has food.
long ago they had fish, but got rid of it. this is the first time they have had fish for lent since. you can put whatever topping they have on there that you want, so i got tartar sauce, & lettuce. the fish itself was fine, the coating was a bit crispy. the tartar sauce on the other hand was terrible. it tasted more like a dill dressing of some sort. it came in a little tub labeled ken's steakhouse (they make good salad dressing, usually, so i was surprised it was bad).
if you get fish & see that the tartar sauce is from them don't use it. or at least dip a finger in it for a taste test before you dump it on your fish.

*do not go on a friday. you will have a long wait & the stuff might not even be done.

i've decided that this is the last of the random frivolous feb. stuff because the other links they have do not interest me. those of you who are annoyed with the random frivolous feb. stuff are thrilled, i'm sure.

today's random thing is a random color. most of which are probably more interesting than the pantone color of the year ~~cloud dancer~~ white.

the color they gave me is coral red which is HEX: #B32821 RGB: 179-040-033, according to them.

our mom read to us (brother & me) there were no museums, child-friendly, or otherwise, near us. mom probably taught us basic math too, but i was young & that was a long time ago.

yes. only because a children's library card was free if you lived in the school district the library was located in. otherwise we would not have had one.

1. Scrounge for change (couch, ashtray, etc.) to make a purchase?
it has been awhile. but i look for change to gather up to put into rolls to exchange for bills at the bank.

2. Visit a dentist?
later part of 2025.

3. Make a needed change to your life?
an unwilling change happened in jan. of 2017.

4. Decide on a complete menu well in advance of the evening meal?
well, we don't really have more than a main dish and a side, so this week.

5. Spend part of the day (other than daily hygiene) totally/mostly naked?

i think of egg salad as a lunch thing, but i guess if you really need dinner ideas it's worth a try.

today's random thing (this post explains it) for frivolous feb. is a random weird word. well, they call it weird but some could be called rare, or little-used.
maybe someone could use one of them as a word for scrabble, or one might be an answer to a crossword clue sometime.

today's random thing is a paragraph. and like the random sentence could be used as a writing prompt, if someone was inspired to use it as such.

Twenty seconds were all that was left and Richard could hear each one tick by. Fifteen seconds now remained and the panic began to fully set in. Ten seconds and he wasn't sure he had enough time. Five seconds, four, three, two, one...
