since it will get hotter before it gets cooler, especially in the south & southwest, this is info people need.

HEAT EXHAUSTION

feeling faint or dizzy

excessive sweating

cool, pale, clammy skin

nausea or vomiting

rapid, weak pulse

muscle cramps

treatment: get to a cool, air conditioned place. drink water if fully conscious. take a cool shower or use cool compresses. (i suggest using them around your neck or on the inside of your wrists, where the blood vessels or arteries are close to the surface.)

HEAT STROKE

throbbing headache

no sweating

body temperature above 103 F (39.4 C)

red, hot, dry skin

nausea or vomiting

rapid, strong pulse

may lose consciousness

treatment: CALL 911 (or whatever equivalent is in your country) take immediate action to cool the person until help arrives. (i suggest providing shade, maybe getting them inside if they're on hot cement & use cool compresses on them)

there's this thing going around tumblr lately about how weird/strange/scary we humans might seem to aliens species. now there is a whole tumblr dedicated to that idea [tumblr.com profile] humans-are-seriously-weird. it got me to thinking about weird stuff we humans do.

food.
we eat the craziest things; hot peppers, things fried in fat, poison fish, fish that has been left to rot for a long time, fungus & berries that grow in thorny bushes. we eat things in weird combinations that gross out some people and fascinate others.
some people are very picky about what they eat. some won't eat foods with certain textures, or will only eat foods of a certain color. the aliens understand food allergies, or rather allergies in general (some species refuse to land in any country where it's currently pollen season.)

fun
that things that we do for fun or recreation would confuse most aliens; racing motor vehicles of various kids around at high speeds, running, swimming or riding a bike over long distances & sometimes rough terrain. we shoot projectile weapons at targets. some humans jump out of perfectly good flying machines with nothing more than (what looks to the aliens) like a large bed sheet to slow them down before they hit the ground.
others jump off of bridges with a giant elastic band attached to their ankles. still others walk along a wire high off of the ground & some didn't think that was challenging enough, so they made a line that goes slack when you walk on it and put that high up. bad enough it's slack, but people jump & flip on it too.

pranks
aliens just don't get it. why in the name of everything that is decent & holy in this galaxy would you put hot sauce in someone's milkshake or in their shampoo? or fill their 4-wheeled motor vehicle with golf-balls? or put a bucket of water over a door so it pours down on someone's head? or convince them they won a a multi-million dollar lottery when they didn't?
the human committee that's in charge of alien/human relations prays daily that one of these idiots won't get the idea to put a whoopee cushion on the leader of the alien exploratory teams' chair or replaces their cup with a dribble one & creates an interstellar incident.

one of the things i missed while i was gone was festivids. not much in any fandom that i liked this year. but i liked this one;
gone, gone, gone -one hundred and one dalmatians (1961)

a not festivids vid; brighter than the sun -star trek (mostly the new movie, includes clips form the others about half-way through)

did you know there's a DS9 documentary in the works? you can pre-order it on DVD/blu-ray or get tickets to a showing of it on los angles NYC or london.

speculation on NCIS: NOLA's premier date

and stuff that i wanted to post before my absence from the internet:

how to delete your livejournal

a star trek vid; confident a celebration of 50 years of amazing women in Trek (according to the summery)

R.I.P carrie fisher
ways to honor her memory (according to this twitter post)
one person's encounter whit her at dragon-con

i did this a few times & decided to re-post it.

not just for the holidays, but for any gift giving occasion.

edwardrhamiliton.com the place for books. some of the books are slightly damaged & if you don't mind that these are good bargains. i've bought from them for years and really like this company. the have the added bonus of having an actual catalog that you can have sent to your home, or one of you're friend's homes. most of their orders ship within 48 hours of them getting your order so i wouldn't do last-minute stuff with them.

sock dreams the place for socks & stockings. i've never used them, but heard many good things. if you, or someone on your list, likes unique socks and/or stockings this is the place to shop.

[deviantart.com profile] humon  on deviantart who does scandinavia and the world has some merchandise now. (never got anything from here)

booksfree which is like netflix for books. they have various rental plans for 2 to 20 books at a time. take as long as you want to read then & then ship them back. they're all paperback editions, they also have MP3 & CD audio books and children's books. you can even have a combo plan. they usually have a 50% off the first month thing going on, so you use that to try it.

the guy who does rejected princesses has posters for sale, calendars & cards too. and now he has a RP book with a bunch of new entries.

adagio tea sells loose-leaf teas & tea paraphernalia. they have all kinds; black, decaf, green, etc. & even fandom blends! (it's better to search for the one you're interested in, than to look through their list) there could be more than one for what you're interested in. for example; there are a couple for daniel jackson of SG-1, so read the flavor description to see if it's something you might like. they sell sample tins that make about 5 cups (except for some which are 10 or the ice tea, which is 6 pouches that make 40oz), so you can try it before committing to a larger amount.
they even tell you at what temperature & how long to steep the teas for.
make sure you read the whole page for the tea you're interested in, as some are higher in caffeine than others. (never got anything from them)

Reposted from my Facebook entry:

There is a supposed survey with Trump's and Pence's logo at the top that is alleged to be an official survey of attitudes toward their plans. Don't take it. Don't fill it out. Don't put your name on it.

It is deceptive to the max. It gives you the titles of bills they plan to submit to Congress, and programs they plan to do -- but these are doublespeak. It does not give you enough information to correctly interpret what you are being asked. The 'questions' are misleading, biased, incomplete, inadequate. For example, the 'infrastructure' plan to rebuilt highways (and that's all you're told -- do you like it or not?) is actually about privatizing them, selling them to individuals and making them all toll roads. But they don't tell you that. It's the same with everything else on this so-called survey -- all of it is 1984-style doublespeak, lies. There is no place to say that you are against anything, just 'no comment' -- so from the start the entire thing is biased, incorrect, not valid for true statistical measurement.

A valid survey would give you options similar to these: Like very much, like a little, neutral, dislike a little, dislike very much. This survey's choices are: Highly important, somewhat important, not important, no opinion. Do you see the difference? There is no way to say you oppose anything, only that you have no opinion -- which is a lie, if you are motivated enough to take the survey in the first place.

Let me also point out that posting it on Facebook is not a statistically correct way of obtaining survey results. Those who reply will be self-selected; there is no way to evaluate the respondents in any way to make sure there is a representative sampling of people from all viewpoints and geographic locations. In a real survey, respondents are carefully selected to make sure they meet the criteria set up by the surveyors -- for example, geographic location, income level, race, political views, age. There is no way to do that online. Respondents are likely to be either rampant Trump/Pence supporters or people who are deeply opposed -- but since the survey is slanted toward Trump/Pence support, anything else won't be measured properly.

I have written surveys. I have done surveying for elections and other purposes. This is not how it is done. None of this is professionally done. None of it is properly organized. There is no way to use this survey to arrive at a statistically correct result of any kind.

I suspect that what this is for is to collect the names of US citizens. I do not know why. But this thing is so fake, so purposely skewed to favor the incoming administration, that it cannot have a neutral or good purpose.

Don't fill it out. Don't answer it. Do please feel free to repost what I have written here.

from the post:
It’s called Havocscope. It’s got information and prices for all sorts of edgy information. Ever wondered how much cocaine costs by the gram, or how much a kidney sells for, or (worst of all) how much it costs to hire an assassin?

In case you’re wondering, Havocscope is a database full of information regarding the criminal underworld. The information you will find there has been taken from newspapers and police reports.

it's time to nominate stuff for [community profile] festivids . i considered nominating some fandoms, but this year they want you to sign up on their site to do it. i don't want to go though the bother of signing up for yet another site.

so if you are signed up or soon will be, could you do me a favor & put some of mine on your list if you fall short of the 10 fandom limit?

i think they qualify & don't have many fan vids;
NCIS: new orleans
the quest (2014)
ghost adventures
quantum leap
golden girls

and if you're a vidder & get one of these as your assignment, i have some ideas.

a small town school in California desperately needs books.
We need racially diverse books. We need graphic novels. We need women’s studies. We need science. We need series. We need film. We need comics. We need music. We need biographies of important people. Looking for Young Adult. Classics. We want zines! Contemporary. Poetry. Everything that would make a difference in a young person’s life. Writers send us YOUR BOOK. We have many non-readers who we’d love to turn on to reading. We need a way to take this tiny area and bring it into the 21st century. We have a whole bunch of kids who don’t like to read because all they’ve ever been given is things that are either dull , dated, or dumbed down.

The students who are excelling are doing so because they have supportive parents at home and access to books and tablets elsewhere. But most students are without.

So here’s what I’m asking. Will you donate a book? A real book. Something literary or fun—something that speaks to your truth, their truths. Something that teaches them something about the world. Makes them feel less alone?

they have an amazon wish-list too, if you want to go that route.

they've gotten a good response, but could probably use more things.

MAC cosmetics with have a trek-themed line for TOS' 50th anniversary.

MAC Cosmetics has announced a Star Trek-themed line celebrating the film and TV franchise’s 50th anniversary. And resistance, as they say, is futile.

Set to hit stores Sept. 1 and go online Aug. 25, the collection will make its debut at San Diego Comic-Con as part of an exclusive one-day presale July 21 at the MAC Cosmetics store in the Gaslamp district.

“Star Trek is an iconic pop culture phenomenon whose storylines pushed gender and racial boundaries,” says MAC creative director James Gager of the beauty brand’s decision to launch the line. “For its 50th anniversary, we celebrate each of Star Trek’s powerful women in a transcending, transformational makeup collection.
