some things

1. tried the new oreo Os last week. rather bleh, not the same without those little "cream" pieces that looked like marshmallow disks.

2. trying to find a new scent of deodorant with a half-stuffed nose is no fun. chose secret scent expressions coconut splash invisible solid.
considered boho berry; a kind of dusty berry scent. also considered chill ocean; kind of smells like the "fresh" or "powder" scents. the hawaii citrus smells like cheap vitamin c tablets. the classic coco butter kind of smells like some sort of hand lotion, but not quite.
hopefully it will work out, there is that troublesome thing called body chemistry after all.

3. there a guy here that complains every day about going outside to smoke. i'm like "dude, you knew there was a smoke-free place when you applied to be here."

4. i maybe be a much larger size in bras than i thought. it's going to be a major pain to find one that fits & that i like. the sides on the bigger once usually cut into my armpits. i swear whoever designs these thing never has to wear one.
i got these things from my mom, which she apologized for. on
on the other end of the scale was my dad's mother who once said that when she was young hers were like half lemons, but became fried eggs when she got older.

PSA: heat exhaustion vs. heat stroke

(originally posted on 7-11-16)

since it will get hotter before it gets cooler, especially in the south & southwest, this is info people need.

HEAT EXHAUSTION

feeling faint or dizzy

excessive sweating

cool, pale, clammy skin

nausea or vomiting

rapid, weak pulse

muscle cramps

treatment: get to a cool, air conditioned place. drink water if fully conscious. take a cool shower or use cool compresses. (i suggest using them around your neck or on the inside of your wrists, where the blood vessels or arteries are close to the surface.)

HEAT STROKE

throbbing headache

no sweating

body temperature above 103 F (39.4 C)

red, hot, dry skin

nausea or vomiting

rapid, strong pulse

may lose consciousness

treatment: CALL 911 (or whatever equivalent is in your country) take immediate action to cool the person until help arrives. (i suggest providing shade, maybe getting them inside if they're on hot cement & use cool compresses on them)

oreo Os are back! (sort of)

today (yesterday rather) i spotted oreo Os cereal at wal-mart. however, they changed it. they no longer have the little disks of marshmallow/cream stuff, now it looks like like they cream is no on the Os in a bumpy texture. kind of like the cookies & cream cereal from malt o meal.

i would've gotten some, but a bit TMI )

humans are weird

there's this thing going around tumblr lately about how weird/strange/scary we humans might seem to aliens species. now there is a whole tumblr dedicated to that idea [tumblr.com profile] humans-are-seriously-weird. it got me to thinking about weird stuff we humans do.

food.
we eat the craziest things; hot peppers, things fried in fat, poison fish, fish that has been left to rot for a long time, fungus & berries that grow in thorny bushes. we eat things in weird combinations that gross out some people and fascinate others.
some people are very picky about what they eat. some won't eat foods with certain textures, or will only eat foods of a certain color. the aliens understand food allergies, or rather allergies in general (some species refuse to land in any country where it's currently pollen season.)

fun
that things that we do for fun or recreation would confuse most aliens; racing motor vehicles of various kids around at high speeds, running, swimming or riding a bike over long distances & sometimes rough terrain. we shoot projectile weapons at targets. some humans jump out of perfectly good flying machines with nothing more than (what looks to the aliens) like a large bed sheet to slow them down before they hit the ground.
others jump off of bridges with a giant elastic band attached to their ankles. still others walk along a wire high off of the ground & some didn't think that was challenging enough, so they made a line that goes slack when you walk on it and put that high up. bad enough it's slack, but people jump & flip on it too.

pranks
aliens just don't get it. why in the name of everything that is decent & holy in this galaxy would you put hot sauce in someone's milkshake or in their shampoo? or fill their 4-wheeled motor vehicle with golf-balls? or put a bucket of water over a door so it pours down on someone's head? or convince them they won a a multi-million dollar lottery when they didn't?
the human committee that's in charge of alien/human relations prays daily that one of these idiots won't get the idea to put a whoopee cushion on the leader of the alien exploratory teams' chair or replaces their cup with a dribble one & creates an interstellar incident.

a thing & some letters

you can't smoke in any of houses where i am at now. if you want to smoke you have to go to designated areas, unfortunately one is with in 30 feet or so of our place. smoke often drifts over here & so does some of the conversation that happens when the smokers congregate.

and now the letters;

dear ABC,

you're bring back the gong show?! of all of the games shows from the last 40 years you had to pick that one? no wonder you're at the bottom of the ratings heap.
bad enough you did that, but you have a host that 1. looks like he died 40 years ago & was resurrected for the job. 2. from certain angles looks like a cheap clone of robin williams & 3. is apparently mike myers in latex makeup.

shaking my head,
a-angel

dear mike myers,
is your career that much in the crapper that you need to sink to this? did you run out of austin powers & shrek money already? did your wife get most everything in the divorce? or are you just getting money for the kids college funds?

no a fan, but you can do better,
a-angel

a bunch of stuff

one of the things i missed while i was gone was festivids. not much in any fandom that i liked this year. but i liked this one;
gone, gone, gone -one hundred and one dalmatians (1961)

a not festivids vid; brighter than the sun -star trek (mostly the new movie, includes clips form the others about half-way through)

did you know there's a DS9 documentary in the works? you can pre-order it on DVD/blu-ray or get tickets to a showing of it on los angles NYC or london.

speculation on NCIS: NOLA's premier date

and stuff that i wanted to post before my absence from the internet:

how to delete your livejournal

a star trek vid; confident a celebration of 50 years of amazing women in Trek (according to the summery)

R.I.P carrie fisher
ways to honor her memory (according to this twitter post)
one person's encounter whit her at dragon-con

what i watched/read while i was gone

saw only one movie on DVD; the peanuts movie. i hate to use the word delightful, but it was. if you're a fan of the comics/cartoons you'll spot a boat-load of references.

in TV; the season finally of NCIS: new orleans was not a let-down really, but spoiler )

the new season of the amazing race started & ended while i was gone. it's been just so-so for a while, but yet i still watch.

in books; i haven't read may but the ones i liked are; Queen Victoria's Children by John Van der Kiste, Heads in Beds: A Reckless Memoir of Hotels, Hustles, and So-Called Hospitality by Jacob Tomsky & The Spies of Warsaw by Alan Furst

i'm back (i think)

as part of the disaster that took over my life not only did my brother & i loose the internet, but we had to move. it's a small place in a village, which means neighbors. something we've never really dealt with before. we've always lived out in the country where the closest neighbor was at least a half a football field (american football that is) lengthen away. now the closest one is a literal stone's throw away. we also have to pay rent, a new experience as well.
there's no smoking, drugs or loud parties (not that we did that anyway) & all kids under 18 have to be home by 10 pm. there are also "quiet hours" between 10 pm & 7 am. which puts some restriction on late-night wal-mart shopping.

we have internet, which is good & crap tv reception, which is bad. so i can't see my precious NCIS: new orleans "live" & have to catch it on cbs.com (which put the 3 i missed in jan. behind a paywall. bastards) & we were getting something called cozi tv which had quantum leap episodes (30-something scott bakula at his finest) but we're putting it on the netflix DVD list. they don't have it on streaming.

in the early part of january my life turned to liquid crap. as a result i lost internet access. i don't know when or if i will be able to get back on-line (i'm doing this from the library) good thoughts/vibes & general well-wishes for an improved situation would be welcome.
i had signed up to renew DW before it all hit the fan, but didn't get a payment in (sorry) it's just as well because i wouldn't be getting any use from it.
and i'm missing festivids too. damn it.

not a challenge, just a goal

for a while now i've wanted to read a book on/about each of the US presidents. i had read a truman biography by david mccullough a few years ago & liked it. but had been not really "into" reading stuff about the rest of the presidents.

however, this year with my book lender (formally booksfree) want to read list getting shorter i decided to give it a go. the problem is that for the more obscure presidents they don't have anything if you just search by name, sometimes it was just a collection of speeches they did, & even with looking stuff up on amazon & then looking to see if they have it, i only have 15 titles so far.

that said, there are 3 US presidents i'm not interested in reading about (the best president ever reagan, bush sr. & jr.) so that is 3 less i have to look for.

i have the first one (about washington) on the to-be-shipped list but it's a "rare book" so it might be awhile before i get it.

and it might take me longer that a year to do this.

what can i say that has not been said by others, and better too i'm sure.

i've been thinking of adding some of her books (the princess diarist & surrender the pink) to my ever-growing list of stuff to read some day. i should see if booksfree (now called book lender) has them.

[personal profile] twistedchick has heard that star wars episode VIII is all about leia, which would be a nice tribute. at the very least they need to write a nice dedication of the movie to her.

my brother's first NCIS: NOLA

because ther was no agents of s.h.i.e.l.d yesterday we watched NCIS: NOLA. it was my broth's first time watching it, here is some of his comments;

(about pride) is he supposed to have an accent? i replied yes. and there were complaints about the one he was doing in the beginning & had to change it. although i like the first one better.

when spoiler ) my brother said: you & your soap operas.

pride goes to get his gun: he keeps his gun in a filing cabinet?

they're interrogating someone & the door is open, you can see it leads outside, not into a hall:  wait. their interrogation room opens to the outside? me: it's a whole casual thing. it's just a building in the city. with only a couple of guards.

the 3-sentence fic-a-thon is still going on. for how much longer, i don't know.

i got to see NCIS: NOLA "live" tonight because my brother's agents of s.h.e.i.l.d wasn't on. (squee!)

spoilers )
i saw a video that zoe mclellan posted on her twitter (i think) that said the reason she's out of the show is because her "character ran her course": which is what i thought it was.

still don't like the new woman.

shopping guide

i did this a few times & decided to re-post it.

not just for the holidays, but for any gift giving occasion.

edwardrhamiliton.com the place for books. some of the books are slightly damaged & if you don't mind that these are good bargains. i've bought from them for years and really like this company. the have the added bonus of having an actual catalog that you can have sent to your home, or one of you're friend's homes. most of their orders ship within 48 hours of them getting your order so i wouldn't do last-minute stuff with them.

sock dreams the place for socks & stockings. i've never used them, but heard many good things. if you, or someone on your list, likes unique socks and/or stockings this is the place to shop.

[deviantart.com profile] humon  on deviantart who does scandinavia and the world has some merchandise now. (never got anything from here)

booksfree which is like netflix for books. they have various rental plans for 2 to 20 books at a time. take as long as you want to read then & then ship them back. they're all paperback editions, they also have MP3 & CD audio books and children's books. you can even have a combo plan. they usually have a 50% off the first month thing going on, so you use that to try it.

the guy who does rejected princesses has posters for sale, calendars & cards too. and now he has a RP book with a bunch of new entries.

adagio tea sells loose-leaf teas & tea paraphernalia. they have all kinds; black, decaf, green, etc. & even fandom blends! (it's better to search for the one you're interested in, than to look through their list) there could be more than one for what you're interested in. for example; there are a couple for daniel jackson of SG-1, so read the flavor description to see if it's something you might like. they sell sample tins that make about 5 cups (except for some which are 10 or the ice tea, which is 6 pouches that make 40oz), so you can try it before committing to a larger amount.
they even tell you at what temperature & how long to steep the teas for.
make sure you read the whole page for the tea you're interested in, as some are higher in caffeine than others. (never got anything from them)

a warning

from [personal profile] twistedchick
Reposted from my Facebook entry:

There is a supposed survey with Trump's and Pence's logo at the top that is alleged to be an official survey of attitudes toward their plans. Don't take it. Don't fill it out. Don't put your name on it.

It is deceptive to the max. It gives you the titles of bills they plan to submit to Congress, and programs they plan to do -- but these are doublespeak. It does not give you enough information to correctly interpret what you are being asked. The 'questions' are misleading, biased, incomplete, inadequate. For example, the 'infrastructure' plan to rebuilt highways (and that's all you're told -- do you like it or not?) is actually about privatizing them, selling them to individuals and making them all toll roads. But they don't tell you that. It's the same with everything else on this so-called survey -- all of it is 1984-style doublespeak, lies. There is no place to say that you are against anything, just 'no comment' -- so from the start the entire thing is biased, incorrect, not valid for true statistical measurement.

A valid survey would give you options similar to these: Like very much, like a little, neutral, dislike a little, dislike very much. This survey's choices are: Highly important, somewhat important, not important, no opinion. Do you see the difference? There is no way to say you oppose anything, only that you have no opinion -- which is a lie, if you are motivated enough to take the survey in the first place.

Let me also point out that posting it on Facebook is not a statistically correct way of obtaining survey results. Those who reply will be self-selected; there is no way to evaluate the respondents in any way to make sure there is a representative sampling of people from all viewpoints and geographic locations. In a real survey, respondents are carefully selected to make sure they meet the criteria set up by the surveyors -- for example, geographic location, income level, race, political views, age. There is no way to do that online. Respondents are likely to be either rampant Trump/Pence supporters or people who are deeply opposed -- but since the survey is slanted toward Trump/Pence support, anything else won't be measured properly.

I have written surveys. I have done surveying for elections and other purposes. This is not how it is done. None of this is professionally done. None of it is properly organized. There is no way to use this survey to arrive at a statistically correct result of any kind.

I suspect that what this is for is to collect the names of US citizens. I do not know why. But this thing is so fake, so purposely skewed to favor the incoming administration, that it cannot have a neutral or good purpose.

Don't fill it out. Don't answer it. Do please feel free to repost what I have written here.
